Of course The Band was a huge influence on Phish and many other bands. But Levon’s own musical career is just so inspiring…. from wanting to leave the Bob Dylan scene in the 60s despite all the success around it in order to follow his own musical tastes to the incredible Midnight Rambles of recent years. I was lucky enough to go to four of the Rambles and play at one, and these were life changing experiences. Jon Fishman called home from the parking lot after the first one I went to, saying it was a top musical experience of his life.

RUSH TO TOUR NORTH AMERICA THIS FALL

Rush has unveiled their first tour dates in support of the forthcoming studio album Clockwork Angels. The massive tour will kick off September 7 in Manchester, NH and will play Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Winnipeg, Philadelphia, Toronto, Boston, Brooklyn, Seattle, San Jose, and more before ending on December 2 in Houston, Texas.     YO LA TENGO, LIARS, SUNN O))), ZOLA JESUS, THEE OH SEES,
    THE MOUNTAIN GOATS AND MORE ALSO CONFIRMED

    The Independent Weekly proudly announces its third annual Hopscotch, North Carolina’s largest and most diverse music festival that has, once again, gotten just a touch grander. Scheduled for Sept. 68, 2012, in downtown Raleigh, with 175 bands in 15 venues, Hopscotch has grown to offer fans more local, national and international choices in just about every genre imaginablefrom classic indie rock and emerging hip-hop to experimental heavy metal and gospel-blues orchestras.

    This year, three new venuesthe majestic Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh’s beautiful Contemporary Art Museum and the historic Long View Centeradd another exciting dimension to the festival and its lineup.

    Hopscotch will be highlighted by two nights in Raleigh City Plaza, the city’s most captivating downtown space. On Friday, Sept. 7, two rock legends, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Built to Spill, will be joined by dynamic opener Zammuto. And on Saturday, Sept. 8, possibly the best live crew not only in hip-hop but all of music, The Roots, headline with New York disco force Escort and local soul project Shirlette and the Dynamite Brothers supporting.

    Roughly 165 other bands perform in 14 clubs during the festival’s three days. A sampling of these acts includes: Yo La Tengo, Liars, Sunn O))), Danny Brown, Thee Oh Sees, Baroness, Death Grips, Deerhoof, Damien Jurado, Flosstradamus, Zola Jesus, Laurel Halo, Pallbearer, Young Magic, Lambchop, Cities Aviv, Oneida, Wye Oak, Samantha Crain, Glenn Jones, The Spits and Colin Stetson.
