‘Boys & Girls’

Cover Art
Alabama Shakes’ debut
release of Boys & Girls marks the arrival of a major new rock-and-roll band. The album is available everywhere
now on ATO
Records.Recorded at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN and produced and mixed by the band members, the album is
a vibrant fusion of swampy, dirty Southern rock, blues and soul delivered with punk rock fervor. From the
heartrending
title song to such stomps as “Rise to the Sun,” the album demonstrates the sense of groove and space the
band learned from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply can’t be learned.

From Athens, AL, the band comprising vocalist/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, drummer Steve
Johnson and bassist Zac Cockrell began playing together when they were in high school. When they appeared at a
Nashville record store, people started to take notice of the group’s relentless, hard-charging live attack, and Howard’s
magnetic stage presence. One fan included Justin Gage, the founder of the blog Aquarium Drunkard who soon after
posted “You Ain’t Alone,” on his blog in late July, calling it “a slice of the real.” And, literally
overnight, all hell broke loose.

GZA SET TO PERFORM AT SXSW WITH GRUPO FANTASMO;

ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM FOR BABYGRANDE RECORDS & LECTURE DATES

GZA will be performing with Grammy-winning 8 piece Latin super band Grupo Fantasma on Saturday March 17 at the Haven Club. GZA will be headlining Babygrande Records’ showcase.

GZA’s next album, Dark Matter, (Babygrande), due in 2012, will discuss the universe and science fiction. It is informed by his longtime fascination with astronomy and quantum physics. In his own words:

“I’ve been interested in many branches of science for years. RZA and I constantly exchange books and ideas. I recently met with quantum physicists who deepened my interest in the cosmos and gave me further inspiration for this next album. I want to take my listeners on a journey through deep space and deconstruct the idea of science fiction. If you think about it, ‘science fiction’ is an oxymoron but it makes sense because a lot of what was once fiction is now science and a lot of science is fiction until proven beyond hypothesis. For instance, when I was a kid there was a book called “A Wrinkle In Time” and some physicists at Cornell, whom I’m going to meet when I lecture there in April, actually created a wrinkle in time. That’s incredible.”

GZA will return to MIT March 21 to lecture there in partnership with the Civic Media Lab. While there he will meet with more physicists. He will additionally be lecturing at USC, NYU and Cornell this spring.

Lecture Dates:

  • 3/21 – MIT Civic Media Lab lecture
  • 3/25 – NYU EMP Pop Conference/Clive Davis Institute
  • 4/07 – Cornell University lecture

    Tour Dates:

  • 3/17 – Austin – Babygrande Records’ showcase at The Haven Club

  • 4/18 – Brooklyn – Williamsburg Music Hall w/ Bad Brains
  • 4/19 – Philadelphia – Trocadero w/ Bad Brains
