Primus & Gogol Bordello | Red Rocks | Pics

Primus/Gogol Bordello :: 08.12.10 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre :: Morrison, CO

Gogol Bordello and Primus returned to Red Rocks Amphitheatre earlier this month. Primus features Les Claypool (bass, vocals), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and multi-talented drummer Jay Lane, who left touring with the latest Grateful Dead act, Furthur, to join Primus on the road in 2010. Primus formed in Northern California, with musical influences like Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa. There musical style is hard to define, and Primus has been referred to as psychedelic polka, thrash-funk, alternative rock, and much more.

Gogol Bordello’s eight band members hail from across the globe. The band formed in 1999 on NYC’s lower east side, and is known for theatrical stage shows and catchy polka sounding punk songs. Much of Gogol Bordellos sound hails from Gypsy music, and features violins, accordions, guitars, drums and other noisemakers. The last time Gogol Bordello played at Red Rocks Amphitheatre the band sat around with Manu Chao and played music outside of Red Rocks Park until the sun came up in true gypsy style.

Phish :: 08.02.10 :: Town Park :: Telluride, CO

Phish returned to Telluride, CO for the first time in 19 years to perform the first of two shows for a sold out crowd at Town Park. The band opened the show with the anthemic rocker “Down with Disease” before launching into rare fan favorite “Camel Walk.” The first set also included Traffic’s “Light Up Or Leave Me Alone,” Phish’s own “Stash,” and a nod to the great divide in “The Wedge” before closing with high energy versions of “Possum” and “Julius.”

The second set was by all accounts, ferocious, starting off with a huge “Sand > Backwards Down The Number Line > Prince Caspian” sequence and a short “Tweezer” that transitioned into Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman,” which contained some of the deepest funk of the night. They then launched into a high energy “Piper” that led into a nicely placed “Mountains in the Mist” before the onslaught of “David Bowie” and the poignant “Day in the Life” to close the set. Dylan’s “The Mighty Quinn” and “Tweezer Reprise” brought the show to a fulfilling end.

This show can be purchased for download at LivePhish.

Phish performs at Telluride Town Park again tonight (8/10).
